BY TERRY BULGER, CHANNEL 4
If you’ve ever watched the news on television and wondered why reporters only seem to tell us about all the bad
things that have happened, you’re not
alone. It’s a question I’ve heard repeatedly
throughout my 30-year career. The
obvious answer is that it’s only news when
something out of the ordinary happens,
which is why we don’t report airplanes
landing safely or do elaborate weather
coverage on sunny days. But that doesn’t
mean we can’t tell positive stories.
I’m proud to say that Channel 4 in Nashville makes
sure that the good news and the good people of Middle
Tennessee are always part of our newscasts.
Since 1990, my assignment as the station’s feature
reporter has been to find and tell viewers about the
extraordinary and often modest people who live here.
It has led me to peach seed carvers, hog farmers, shoe
shiners, banjo pickers, and cancer survivors—all with a
smile on their face and a story to tell.
During my time at Channel 4, I’ve produced more
than 5,000 television stories about the great people of
Tennessee, and it still feels like I’m just scratching the
surface. How do I find all these good folks? It’s easy, I just
go outside and look around, because they’re everywhere.
Now, on Wednesday
evenings during our 6:30
p.m. newscast, you can
watch a segment we’re
calling Pay It 4Ward. I’ll
focus on the
people who find ways to
make the lives of others better. These are the folks who
feel that someone helped them along the way, and now
they need to return the favor.
When you watch, you’ll be proud of your neighbors
and happy to see that Tennessee still deserves to be
honored as the Volunteer State.
